There are several things I love about this Getty Images photograph, above, from the recent England match. I'm not sure whether what I like the most is the unity of the fans creating the England flag, that sense of belonging and that coming together as one for a moment. Or whether it's the God like way that the captain, Rio Ferdinand is put on the big screen during the National Anthem. It's a way of idolising him and makes him seem far more important than he really is in the grand scheme of things. Both are very powerful pieces of imagery and the combination of both makes for a stunning image.
I fell in love with the above image from the second I saw it. The Getty Images photographer has managed to capture a beautiful image here. It's taken quite early on before an England match versus Switzerland which explaisn the Swiss flags covering the seats. The repition of these and the way they surround the solitary England fan make for a fantastic photograph. He captures that feeling of hope and optimism before a match in the way that he appears to be looking off to an area of the pitch, perhaps at players warming up or officials making last minute touches to the pitch and stadium. It's like the calm before the storm and hints at an aspect of rivalry and a sense of the competition in the match with the contrast between the two counties represented by the flags and the shirt on the man.
